A metal gate in the UAE faces conditions that would test finishes designed for European or North American climates. Surface temperatures on dark metal in direct summer sun can exceed 80°C. UV index regularly hits 11–12 (extreme). Coastal emirates add salt-laden air that accelerates corrosion aggressively.
The finish you choose doesn't just affect how your gate looks on day one — it determines whether it looks good in year 3, year 7, and year 15. Here's how powder coating and liquid paint compare across the criteria that actually matter.
What is Powder Coating?
Powder coating is an electrostatically applied dry finish. Finely ground resin particles are sprayed onto a grounded metal surface, then cured in an oven at 180–200°C. The heat melts the powder into a smooth, continuous film that bonds chemically to the metal rather than sitting on top of it.
The result is a finish that is typically 60–120 microns thick — two to four times the thickness of a standard liquid paint coat — with no solvents, no runs, and no brush marks.
What is Liquid Paint?
Liquid paint — whether applied by brush, roller or spray — is a pigment suspended in a solvent or water carrier. As the carrier evaporates, the pigment is left behind on the surface. A good professional spray job with primer, undercoat and topcoat might achieve 80–100 microns total, but the layers are applied separately and cure at different rates.
Quality varies enormously with liquid paint — from excellent two-pack epoxy systems to cheap single-coat finishes that peel within a year.
Head-to-Head Comparison
| Factor | Powder Coating | Quality Liquid Paint |
|---|---|---|
| Typical lifespan (UAE outdoor) | 12–20 years | 4–8 years |
| UV fade resistance | Excellent (polyester resin) | Good to poor (depends on type) |
| Chip / scratch resistance | Excellent | Moderate |
| Salt air corrosion resistance | Excellent | Moderate |
| Heat resistance (80°C+ surfaces) | Excellent | Moderate — may blister |
| Colour range | 600+ RAL colours | Virtually unlimited |
| Texture options | Matt, satin, gloss, metallic, woodgrain, textured | Matt, satin, gloss |
| Cost (initial) | Slightly higher | Lower |
| Cost (lifetime, recoat cycles) | Lower overall | Higher overall |
| Environmental impact | Lower (no solvents) | Higher (VOC solvents) |
The UAE Climate Problem with Liquid Paint
Liquid paint's main weakness in the Gulf is thermal cycling. When a dark gate heats to 80°C in the afternoon and cools to 25°C at night, the metal expands and contracts. Paint layers bond differently to the metal and to each other, so over time they micro-crack, then crack visibly, then peel. This typically starts around year 3–5 on quality paint jobs, year 1–2 on cheap ones.
Powder coating is a single fused layer bonded to the metal. It flexes with the metal during thermal cycling far more effectively, which is why you routinely see 15-year-old powder-coated gates in Fujairah that still look sharp.
"We repowder gates every few years for homeowners who had them originally painted. The most common comment: 'I wish we'd done this from the start.'"
When Does Liquid Paint Win?
Powder coating requires an oven — which means the piece being coated has to physically go into our workshop. For gates already installed and fixed to walls, re-powder coating requires removal. For very large structural items that physically cannot fit in a powder coating oven, a high-quality two-pack epoxy spray applied on-site is the next best option.
Liquid paint is also appropriate for touch-up repairs between coating cycles — spot-painting a chipped area is easy with a brush; re-powdering a spot is not.
What We Recommend
For any new metal gate fabricated in our workshop: powder coating, always. We sandblast the surface, apply a zinc phosphate primer, then apply powder in your chosen colour and cure at 200°C. This gives you a 15–20 year finish in normal UAE conditions.
For gates that are already installed and show peeling or corrosion: we remove, strip back to bare metal, repowder, and reinstall. The difference is night and day.
We offer over 200 standard RAL colours plus custom metallic and woodgrain finishes. The most popular colours we apply right now are matte black (RAL 9005), anthracite grey (RAL 7016), and a champagne bronze that suits the beige and stone villas common across Fujairah and Sharjah.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you powder coat a gate that's already installed?
We need to remove it from the wall to strip and repowder properly. The process takes 2–3 days. We handle removal, coating and reinstallation as one job.
What colours are available?
Over 200 standard RAL colours plus metallic, woodgrain texture and custom colour matching. We keep samples in our workshop — visit us in Al Hail Industrial, Fujairah to choose in person.
How long does it take?
For new fabrication, powder coating is part of the process and adds no extra lead time. For re-coating an existing gate, typically 2–4 working days depending on size and preparation required.
